Machine-readable facts embedded in a page.
Usually JSON-LD following schema.org vocabulary, describing what the page is: an article, a product, a set of steps, a list of questions. Search engines use it to understand the page, and increasingly answer engines use it to quote from one.
It has to match the visible content. Marking up something the page does not say is a manual-action offence.
