Malware
Software written to harm the device it runs on.
In messaging it arrives as an attachment or a link. The link is now the more common route, because a convincing page asking for a password is cheaper to make than a working exploit and works on more people.
Link checking at send time catches known-bad destinations; it cannot catch a page that turns bad after the message was sent.
