How to mute a conversation
Most complaints about a group chat are volume rather than people. Muting stops it notifying you and leaves you in it, which is usually what somebody actually wants when they think about leaving.
Step by step

Open the conversation's menu
The menu beside the conversation in the list.

Mute it
Notifications from it stop. Everything else is unchanged and nobody is told.

Read it when you choose to
The conversation stays in your list with its unread count, so nothing is lost.

Unmute the same way
The menu offers the reverse whenever you want it.
Worth knowing
- Muting is invisible to everybody else, unlike leaving, which is announced.
- Mentions are worth checking after a period of muting — a message addressed to you directly is easy to miss in a muted group.
- For the hour rather than the group, your phone's own focus or do-not-disturb schedule is the better tool, because it applies to everything at once.

Will people know I muted the group?
No. Muting is entirely private.
Is muting the same as blocking?
No. Muting stops notifications from a conversation. Blocking stops a person reaching you at all.
Can I mute one person in a group?
Muting applies to the conversation. To stop one person reaching you anywhere, block them.
