Do video calls use a lot of mobile data?
Roughly 200 to 900 megabytes an hour for video depending on quality, and around 30 to 60 for voice only. Turning the camera off is by far the biggest saving available.
The exact figure depends on resolution and how much movement there is — a static talking head compresses far better than a moving camera. Most callers adapt the bitrate downward automatically on a poor connection, which is why quality drops rather than the call ending.
On a metered connection, voice-only is a tenth of the cost and usually sufficient.
