How to start a voice call
A voice call is the same as a video call without the camera, and uses about a tenth of the data.
Step by step

Open the conversation
Voice calls start inside a conversation, like video calls.

Press Call
It is next to Video at the top right of the conversation.

Allow the microphone
The browser asks once per device. This is the browser's prompt rather than Naven's.

They are rung wherever Naven is open
And on their phone too, if notifications are on.
Worth knowing
- Voice uses roughly 30 to 60 megabytes an hour against 200 to 900 for video, which matters on a metered connection.
- You can turn the camera on mid-call and turn it off again without dropping the call.
- Calls are not screened. Naven screens messages, and it says so rather than implying the protection extends to calls.
Questions
Do I need a phone number to make a voice call?
No. Naven involves no phone numbers, and a call goes over the internet rather than a telephone network.
Can I call somebody in another country?
Yes, at no extra cost. An internet call does not care about distance beyond a little added delay.
Does a voice call work on a weak connection?
Better than video. The call adapts its quality downward rather than dropping.
