VoIP
Voice carried over the internet rather than a telephone network.
Voice over IP turns speech into packets and sends them like any other traffic, which is why an internet call costs nothing extra to make internationally. It is also why it degrades differently from a phone call: a bad line crackles, a bad VoIP call stutters and drops syllables.
Quality depends on latency and jitter more than on raw bandwidth, which is why a fast connection can still sound bad.
