Latency
The delay between something being sent and it arriving.
In a call, latency is what makes people talk over each other. Below about 150 milliseconds a conversation feels natural; above 300 it starts to feel like a satellite link and people begin leaving gaps. In messaging it matters less, but it is what separates an app that feels instant from one that feels sluggish.
Distance sets a floor — light takes time — and everything else adds to it.
