A mark showing that a message has been opened.
Useful and socially costly in the same feature. It removes the ambiguity that makes a delayed reply bearable, and on platforms where it cannot be turned off it creates an obligation to answer immediately.
The usual compromise is a switch, with the rule that turning yours off hides everybody else's too.
