How to set a nickname
A nickname changes how somebody appears in your list, for you only.
Step by step

Open the conversation's menu
From the conversation list.

Choose Set nickname
Type what you want to see.

It applies to your view only
Nobody else sees it and the other person is not told.
Worth knowing
- Useful when two people in your list share a first name.
- It does not change their account name anywhere else.
- Clearing it restores the name on their account.
Questions
Does the other person see the nickname?
No. It is entirely local to your account.
Can I nickname a group?
Yes, the same way.
Does it change their real name?
No.
